Are Tablecloths Suitable for Outdoor Use? A Guide to Weather-Resistant Options

When it comes to outdoor dining in the UK, finding the right table covering can be a bit of a balancing act. You want something that looks great, can handle spills, and ideally withstands the British weather — from sudden sunshine to surprise showers. But not all tablecloths are made equal, especially when it comes to outdoor use.

Here’s what you need to know when choosing a tablecloth for your patio, or garden table.

Which Tablecloths Are Suitable for Outdoor Use?

At Jolee, we offer a range of handmade tablecloths, and while our fabric cloths are ideal for indoor dining and formal occasions, they’re not designed for use in the elements. However, most of our other options are more outdoor-friendly — to varying degrees.

✅ Wipe Clean Tablecloths (Oilcloth & PVC Vinyl)

These are by far the most popular choice for outdoor dining tables. Our Oilcloth, PVC vinyl and Acrylic Tablecloths are:

  • Water-resistant
  • Easy to wipe clean
  • Available in a wide range of prints and colours
  • Suitable for occasional exposure to rain

However, it’s worth noting:

Extended exposure to rain and UV (over days or weeks) can begin to compromise the surface and backing, particularly on lower-grade base cloths. You may start to notice small black dots forming or slight water seepage over time.

Our recommendation?
Use these cloths outdoors regularly, but bring them in or cover them when not in use for long periods.

❌ Outdoor-Specific Cloths

We also offer special outdoor cloths that are even more durable. These are designed with better weather resistance and are suitable to be left out most of the year.

  • Great for BBQs, summer dining, garden parties
  • Thicker, more durable base cloths
  • Can be paired with matching outdoor cushions and seat pads for a coordinated look-see this Video of our Seatpads

Even so: Avoid leaving any cloth outdoors permanently. Long-term exposure to damp, frost or direct sun will eventually take its toll — even on the toughest materials.

❌ What to Avoid Outdoors: Fabric Tablecloths

Our 100% cotton or polycotton fabric cloths are primarily made for indoor use only. They can be used on outdoor dining tables but offer no protection from the elements. They look elegant and feel lovely, but they:

  • Aren’t water-resistant
  • Aren’t UV-stable for long periods of time

Best for: dining rooms, kitchen tables, or special indoor events.

Quick Tips for Using Tablecloths Outdoors

  • ✔ Choose PVC vinyl, oilcloth or outdoor-specific cloths for best durability
  • ✔ Bring your cloth in when not in use for long periods
  • ✔ Avoid using fabric cloths outside
  • ✔ Shake or wipe down after rain to prevent pooling
  • ✔ Store flat or rolled, not folded, to avoid creases and cracks
